Why leave GoDaddy

What GoDaddy doesn't give you.

01 / 04 · Features GoDaddy hides
0

GoDaddy stripped-down M365 lacks full Exchange admin, Conditional Access, and Compliance Center. Direct tenant gets all three — plus Intune, Defender, and FastTrack.

02 / 04 · BAA from GoDaddy
NO

GoDaddy does not sign HIPAA BAAs for their M365 resold product. Healthcare clients must move to a direct Microsoft tenant to stay compliant.

03 / 04 · GoDaddy markup
0%

Typical GoDaddy M365 resold pricing costs 15-25% more per user than a direct Microsoft tenant. Multi-year that's a full finance review.

04 / 04 · MX cutover downtime
1-2hr

Actual migration window is 1-2 hours during off-hours MX flip. Parallel running during DNS propagation means no emails are lost. Most 50-user migrations done in 48 hours end-to-end.

What's included

A direct Microsoft tenant. Clean.

01

IMAP mailbox transfer

Connect to GoDaddy Workspace or GoDaddy-resold M365 via IMAP. BitTitan MigrationWiz moves emails, folders, and attachments with incremental sync so users keep working throughout.

02

Tenant-to-tenant upgrade

If you are on GoDaddy-resold Microsoft 365, we do a full tenant-to-tenant migration into a Microsoft-direct tenant. Mail, OneDrive, SharePoint — and you get real admin access.

03

DNS + MX cutover at GoDaddy

We update MX, SPF, DKIM, CNAME, and TXT records in GoDaddy DNS panel. Domain stays registered at GoDaddy — only mail records change. Propagation handled in 1-4 hours.

04

Multi-domain consolidation

Bring multiple GoDaddy domains into one Microsoft 365 tenant. Every domain set up as accepted domain with correct DNS. Common for acquisitive businesses.

05

Security baseline

Entra ID, MFA, Conditional Access, Defender for Office 365, DLP — all the features GoDaddy stripped out are deployed in your direct tenant before day one.

06

BAA + compliance

Microsoft signs HIPAA BAAs directly on M365 Business and Enterprise tenants. Healthcare, legal, and regulated clients move to stay compliant — GoDaddy does not offer this.

Delivery methodology

48 hours. SMB. End to end.

01

Assess

1 day · GoDaddy plan audit, mailbox count, domain list. Fixed-price flat-rate or per-user quote in 24-48 hours.

02

Plan

1-2 days · Direct Microsoft 365 tenant provisioned, domains verified, MFA + security baseline deployed.

03

Migrate

24-48 hrs · IMAP sync or tenant-to-tenant move runs in background. Users keep working in GoDaddy until MX flip.

04

Cutover

1-2 hrs off-hours · Update MX/SPF/DKIM at GoDaddy DNS. Parallel running during propagation. 7-30 days hypercare.

Real GoDaddy→M365 migrations

Three engagements. Three different shapes.

Anonymized. Scope → challenge → fix → outcome. The kind of operational detail you need before trusting an MSP with a compliance-driven or 24/7-operations cutover.

Healthcare / HIPAA-regulated · 28 users · GoDaddy resold M365 → Direct M365 · GoDaddy M365 → Direct Microsoft 365 (BAA required)

Compliance forced the move — GoDaddy resold tenant cannot sign a BAA

Scope

28-user regional medical practice on GoDaddy resold Microsoft 365. Compliance officer needed signed BAA with Microsoft directly + Conditional Access for PHI-classified content. Neither is available through GoDaddy resold tenants — Microsoft only signs BAAs with direct customers.

Challenge

GoDaddy holds the M365 tenant ownership, the DNS, and the user provisioning. Standard "transfer the tenant" path doesn't exist for resold M365 — you have to provision a new direct tenant and migrate everything across as if it were two separate organizations. Compliance window was tight: needed BAA signed and PHI policies active before next quarterly audit.

Fix

Provisioned new direct M365 tenant with Microsoft Business Premium licensing (Conditional Access + Intune included). BAA signed Microsoft-direct on day 1. Microsoft Purview sensitivity labels deployed for PHI auto-classification before migration. Cutover migration over Saturday-Sunday — MX flip Saturday midnight, delta sync Sunday, Monday morning all 28 users on direct tenant. DNS transferred from GoDaddy to Cloudflare (customer's preference) week after cutover.

Outcome

28 users on direct M365 tenant within 48 hours. BAA in place, Conditional Access enforced, Purview sensitivity labels auto-applying to PHI from day one. Quarterly compliance audit cleared without findings on the email/identity portion.

Logistics / 24-7 operations · 180 users · 3 continents · GoDaddy → Microsoft 365

180 users across 3 continents on GoDaddy email — zero downtime cutover

Scope

180-user logistics company running 24/7 operations across India, Europe, and North America. All on GoDaddy email (not resold M365 — actual GoDaddy Workspace email). Storage and reliability issues were causing missed dispatch communications. Customer needed direct M365 with proper Outlook integration and mobile sync.

Challenge

No "downtime window" — logistics is 24/7. Cutover had to happen around their lowest-traffic hour (Singapore midnight Sunday → 6:30 AM Sunday IST), with email queueing pre-flip and delta sync immediately post-flip. Mobile devices on iOS + Android needed Outlook profile setup without disrupting active drivers/dispatchers.

Fix

GoDaddy Workspace IMAP credentials negotiated for batch migration. M365 Business Standard licensing (right-sized for the user mix). Pre-staged sync ran Friday-Sunday capturing 90%+ of mailbox content. MX flip Sunday early morning IST during lowest-traffic window. Delta sync caught the last 4 hours of mail. Mobile setup pushed via MDM where customer had it; manual setup for the rest during a coordinated 30-min window per region. Standard helpdesk hypercare for 30 days.

Outcome

180 users on M365 within 2 days. Zero downtime experienced by drivers/dispatchers. Email queueing during cutover meant zero dropped messages. Mobile devices working day one across 3 continents.

Real Estate / SMB · ~45 users · Single state · GoDaddy Workspace → Microsoft 365

Standard SMB cutover from GoDaddy Workspace to direct M365

Scope

45-user real estate brokerage on GoDaddy Workspace email. Heavy reliance on email for client communications, contract delivery, MLS notifications. No internal IT — needed everything handled including Outlook setup on agent laptops and mobile devices.

Challenge

GoDaddy Workspace doesn't expose admin export tools — credentials had to be pulled per-mailbox from the GoDaddy control panel where the customer had owner access. Standard small-org IMAP migration pattern, but with the GoDaddy DNS ownership making MX changes need to happen in their portal (not Cloudflare/Route53).

Fix

Pulled mailbox inventory from GoDaddy admin portal. M365 Business Standard licensing. Standard cutover migration over a Friday night → Monday morning window. MX changes done in GoDaddy DNS portal (kept DNS at GoDaddy per customer preference — they didn't want to migrate DNS too). Outlook + mobile setup for all 45 agents during week-1 hypercare.

Outcome

45 users on direct M365 within 3 weeks of engagement. Customer kept GoDaddy as DNS provider, just changed the MX record. No closing transactions disrupted during the cutover week.

What makes GoDaddy→M365 different

The GoDaddy-specific realities.

Generic M365 migration guides skip these. They are the structural differences between resold and direct M365 that determine which features you can actually use.

01

Resold M365 vs Direct M365 — the BAA + Conditional Access gap

If you're paying GoDaddy for Microsoft 365 (vs paying Microsoft directly), you're on resold M365. Microsoft does NOT sign BAAs with resold tenant customers — only with direct customers. Same for advanced Conditional Access policies, Microsoft Purview eDiscovery, Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps. Healthcare, legal, finance, and any compliance-driven org needs a direct tenant. GoDaddy resold to direct M365 IS a migration, not a transfer.

02

GoDaddy Workspace email vs GoDaddy resold M365 — different starting points

Some GoDaddy customers are on the basic GoDaddy Workspace email product (not Microsoft 365 at all). Others are on resold M365 (Outlook web works, but limited admin features). Migration approach differs: Workspace email = standard IMAP migration to direct M365. Resold M365 = tenant-to-tenant style migration to direct M365. We assess which during the discovery phase.

03

DNS ownership at GoDaddy — keep it or move it?

GoDaddy is also a domain registrar. Many customers have their entire DNS hosted at GoDaddy. After M365 migration you have a choice: (a) keep DNS at GoDaddy and just change MX records there, (b) move DNS to Cloudflare/Route53/M365 DNS. Most SMBs keep it at GoDaddy (familiar interface, no transfer cost). Compliance-driven orgs sometimes move to Cloudflare for DNSSEC + faster TTL changes during future cutovers.

04

License right-sizing — what GoDaddy was hiding from you

GoDaddy resold M365 typically locks customers into specific SKUs that maximize their margin. Direct M365 lets you pick from the full Microsoft license catalog: Business Basic ($6/seat), Business Standard ($12.50), Business Premium ($22, includes Intune + Defender + Conditional Access), E3, E5, F1/F3 for frontline workers. We right-size during migration — most customers find they were on the wrong plan with GoDaddy.

05

GoDaddy Workspace mailbox size limits

GoDaddy Workspace email typically caps mailboxes at 10-50 GB depending on plan. Direct M365 Business Standard gives 50 GB primary + 100 GB Online Archive. Most GoDaddy migrations end up with MORE storage available. For customers near their GoDaddy cap, the migration also solves their storage problem in passing.

06

No hybrid coexistence option for GoDaddy migrations

Unlike Exchange Server migrations, GoDaddy → direct M365 has no hybrid path — you can't run both side-by-side with shared free/busy. Means: cutover migration is the only realistic option (under 150 mailboxes, single-weekend cutover). For larger orgs we wave-migrate users, but each wave is a one-way move, no rollback to GoDaddy after cutover.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you migrate GoDaddy email to Microsoft 365?+
We connect to your GoDaddy mailboxes via IMAP and use BitTitan MigrationWiz to transfer all emails, folders, and attachments to Microsoft 365. The migration runs in the background — your team keeps using GoDaddy email until we switch the MX records. Most GoDaddy migrations complete within 48 hours for under 50 users.
Can I keep my domain at GoDaddy after migrating email?+
Yes, absolutely. Your domain stays registered at GoDaddy. We only change the MX (mail) records to point to Microsoft 365. DNS management, domain renewal, and your website all remain with GoDaddy. You can also optionally transfer domain management to Microsoft 365 if you prefer centralized administration.
Is GoDaddy Microsoft 365 the same as buying from Microsoft?+
No. GoDaddy resells Microsoft 365 at a markup with limited admin features. You get the same core apps (Outlook, Word, Excel) but miss advanced admin controls, security features, and direct Microsoft support. Migrating to a direct Microsoft 365 tenant gives you full admin access, Microsoft FastTrack support, and typically lower per-user pricing.
What is the downtime during a GoDaddy to Microsoft 365 migration?+
Minimal — typically 1-2 hours during the MX record cutover. We perform the DNS switch during off-hours (evenings or weekends). During the brief propagation period, emails may arrive at either the old or new mailbox — we run both systems in parallel to catch everything. No emails are lost during the transition.
Can you migrate multiple GoDaddy domains to one Microsoft 365 tenant?+
Yes. We regularly consolidate multiple GoDaddy domains into a single Microsoft 365 tenant. Each domain email addresses are preserved. We configure all domains as accepted domains in Microsoft 365, set up the correct DNS records for each, and ensure mail routing works correctly across all domains. Common for businesses that have grown through acquisitions.
How much does a GoDaddy to Microsoft 365 migration cost?+
GoDaddy email migrations start at $15/user for mailbox-only transfer. If you need domain configuration, user training, and PC setup, our standard package is $40/user. There is a one-time $500 setup fee. For organizations under 10 users, we offer a flat-rate package starting at $750.
I need a signed BAA from Microsoft for HIPAA compliance — can I get one through GoDaddy?+
No. Microsoft only signs BAAs with direct customers, not with resold tenant customers (which is what you have if you buy M365 through GoDaddy). For healthcare, legal, finance, or any compliance-driven use case, you need a direct Microsoft 365 tenant. The migration from GoDaddy resold M365 to direct M365 is technically a tenant-to-tenant style move — we provision the new direct tenant, sign the BAA on day 1, then migrate everything across.
I'm on GoDaddy resold Microsoft 365 — can't I just transfer the tenant to Microsoft directly?+
No transfer path exists. GoDaddy holds the M365 tenant ownership, and Microsoft does not let resold tenants be "promoted" to direct status. You have to provision a new direct M365 tenant and migrate all mailboxes, OneDrive, SharePoint, and Teams across. We handle this — it's effectively a tenant-to-tenant migration with the GoDaddy tenant being deprovisioned afterward.
What's the difference between GoDaddy Workspace email and GoDaddy resold Microsoft 365?+
GoDaddy Workspace email is a basic IMAP email service hosted by GoDaddy themselves — it's NOT Microsoft 365 at all (no Outlook web app, no OneDrive, no Teams). GoDaddy resold M365 is real Microsoft 365 but with limited admin features and resold through GoDaddy's billing. Different starting points need different migration paths: Workspace = standard IMAP migration; Resold M365 = tenant-to-tenant migration. We assess which during the initial discovery call.
Will I lose features when I leave GoDaddy resold M365?+
You GAIN features. Resold M365 limits you to GoDaddy-curated SKUs that maximize their margin. Direct M365 unlocks the full Microsoft license catalog: Business Premium ($22/seat) includes Intune device management, Defender for Endpoint, Conditional Access, and Microsoft Purview eDiscovery — none available on resold. Enterprise SKUs (E3, E5) and Frontline (F1, F3) only available direct. Most customers find they were on the wrong (more expensive than necessary, less feature-rich) plan with GoDaddy.
Do you migrate multiple GoDaddy domains to one M365 tenant for consolidation?+
Yes. Common scenario for businesses that grew through acquisitions and ended up with separate GoDaddy email accounts per acquired domain. We consolidate everything into one direct M365 tenant — each domain becomes an accepted domain in M365, all original email addresses preserved, mail flow routing configured per-domain. Saves licensing costs (one tenant fee structure) and centralizes admin/security policies.

Ditch the reseller. Get real M365.
